Education

Dr. Shaikh Khalil’s professional journey is characterized by a rigorous academic foundation and a commitment to excellence in pediatric care. After obtaining her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the Jordan University of Science and Technology in 2003, she pursued specialized training in pediatric care, culminating in a pediatric residency at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in the US by 2009. Following her residency, Dr. Shaikh Khalil pursued further specialization in Pediatric Gastroenterology with a fellowship at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Ohio, USA, from 2009 to 2012. Continuing her pursuit of knowledge, she completed a fellowship in pediatric nutrition at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in the US in 2013.

Dr. Shaikh Khalil is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in both Pediatrics and Pediatric Gastroenterology, as well as being recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties as a Physician Nutrition Specialist.

Experience

Dr. Shaikh Khalil has 17 years of experience in Pediatrics and Pediatric Gastroenterology. In her professional practice, Dr. Shaikh Khalil has demonstrated proficiency in various aspects of pediatric gastroenterology care, including outpatient and inpatient care, endoscopy, and nutrition rehabilitation. She has extensive experience in providing multidisciplinary care for children with diverse disorders such as cystic fibrosis, congenital heart disease, and inflammatory bowel disease. Beyond her clinical practice, Dr. Shaikh Khalil has made significant contributions to the field through her involvement in national and international committees and organizations dedicated to pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition. She is also recognized for her role as an educator, having received awards for her contributions to medical training.

Dr. Shaikh Khalil’s research interests include nutrition education, gastrointestinal and nutrition manifestations of cystic fibrosis and inflammatory bowel disease, and the importance of bone health and body composition in various disease processes. Her commitment to patient care, research, and mentorship underscores her dedication to advancing the field of pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition.

Prior to joining Danat Al Emarat Hospital, Dr. Shaikh Khalil worked for 10 years as an Attending Pediatric Gastroenterologist and Physician Nutrition Specialist at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, USA; a hospital consistently ranked in the top 10 Children’s hospitals in the United States. She was also an Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine.

Dr. Shaikh Khalil’s scope of practice spans all aspects of pediatric gastroenterology and nutrition care including gastroesophageal reflux disease, feeding difficulties, poor weight gain, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, pancreatic insufficiency, eosinophilic esophagitis, difficulty in swallowing, peptic ulcer disease, helicobacter pylori infection, celiac disease, chronic constipation, chronic abdominal pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, irritable bowel syndrome, and inflammatory bowel disease (including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis).

In addition to the aforementioned scope of practice, Dr. Shaikh Khalil’s fields of expertise include pediatric endoscopy, poor weight gain, nutritional problems, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, and pediatric feeding problems, pediatric hepatology care including those with elevated liver enzymes, jaundice, fatty liver disease, autoimmune hepatitis, alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency, and biliary atresia.
